This is good stuff. We (security) are taking a hard look at the CMU/SEI Information Asset Profiling, but this may help us sprinkle in some business speak depending on who is helping do the valuation. The enterprise folks will use cost, number of users, age of application, etc. and we will look at the type of data stored to determine risk, as that's data that isn't too hard to figure out. Asking the business to value things in this manner is sometimes challenging (RE business impact analysis during risk assessment).

Actually, I *am* being paid by the word:

Total Revenue = # words X $ per word;

(with $ per word = $0)

@Nicko Great story. Yes, that is a mis-application of the "replacement cost method" in valuation. The trouble is that this would probably get the approval of some CPAs, and thus might receive their "stamp of approval".

The third principle is that valuation must be forward-looking.

This reminds me of a time about 7 or 8 years ago when my company was looking at acquiring another firm and, in the process of examining their books, we found their website listed as a $350,000 asset. The site was not some revenue-generating component of their business, just your run of the mill marketing information. When we asked why they thought that their site added more than a third of a million to the value of their business they told us that that was how much they had paid the consultants who built it! (We didn't buy them in the end!)
